Flights from Incheon mostly land in the morning. Seoul hotels mostly check in at 15:00. Between those two facts sits a five-hour window that appears on no itinerary, and it usually goes the same way: you park yourself in a café with a suitcase against your knee, watch your phone drop to 12%, and fight the urge to close your eyes. The first day of the trip becomes a waiting room.

First, the three things not to attempt today
Worth saying up front, because most ruined arrival days are caused by ambition rather than by bad luck.
- A palace. Gyeongbokgung is wide, short on shade, and not somewhere you can wheel a suitcase. Day two at opening time beats it on every measure.
- A traditional market. Gwangjang and Namdaemun move at the pace of the crowd. A 24-inch suitcase is an object that stops that crowd.
- A day trip out of the city. Spend three hours of round-trip travel on a jet-lagged first day and you’ll lose day two as well.
The goal today isn’t coverage. It’s one flat neighbourhood, one real meal, and an early night — which is what saves the rest of the week.
01 / Landing to arrivals hall, 40–60 minutes
The plane reaching the gate is not the same as reaching Seoul. Immigration and baggage claim can take an hour in peak season, and it belongs in your schedule rather than in the “and then we arrive” blur.

02 / Arrivals hall to the train, 15 minutes
Two errands here, and only two: a SIM (or activating your eSIM), and a transit card.

Short answer — the AREX All-Stop train runs from Incheon Terminal 1 to Hongdae Station in about an hour, no transfer. That line is the spine of this whole plan for a simple reason: you can drop your bags at the station you arrive into, spend your first day in that neighbourhood, and leave from the same station on the way out.
03 / 10:00–11:00 — Put the bags down
Some hotels will hold luggage before check-in. The catch is that hotels are usually on the wrong side of day one. Leave your suitcase in Jongno and eat in Hongdae, and you’ve built yourself a 40-minute round trip you’ll resent at 19:00.

04 / 11:00–14:00 — Your first meal, and one flat neighbourhood
Korean restaurants keep break times. A lot of neighbourhood places and old-school nopo spots shut or pause around 15:00, and lunch-only kalguksu shops close for the day entirely. You need to be sitting down before 14:30. Missing that window because you were queueing at a front desk is the single biggest loss available on day one.

05 / 14:00–15:00 — The hour where jet lag wins
The real enemy of a first day is two in the afternoon. Sit down now and you’ll sleep; sleep now and you won’t sleep tonight; miss tonight and you’ve lost tomorrow too. Stay indoors, stay upright, keep moving.

06 / After 15:00 — Check in, collect, stop
Check in, pick your bags back up, and end the day there. The trick is not adding anything. Eat something close by, sleep early, and you’ll start day two at 08:00 as a functioning person.

So what can you leave at home?
Half of what makes those five hours hard is jet lag. The other half is weight — and some of that weight is available in Seoul.
- Hair dryers and styling tools. Korea runs on 220V/60Hz. If home is 110V/50Hz, a plug adapter does not change the voltage — a non-dual-voltage tool dies on first use, and what you actually need is a transformer, not an adapter.
