On a wet day, luggage stops being an inconvenience
A suitcase on a clear day is annoying. A suitcase in the rain writes off the whole day. Museum, bookshop, department store — none of them are comfortable while you’re towing a soaked 24-inch case behind you.

Bad weather is when renting pays off hardest
- Hair dryers and styling tools. On a day you’ve been rained on, hotel dryer performance turns into a real problem. But bringing your own from home isn’t the fix — Korea runs on 220V/60Hz, and if you’re coming from a 110V/50Hz country a plug adapter does not change the voltage. What can I do in Seoul when it rains all day?
Seoul handles bad weather unusually well, because so much of it is indoors and connected. A jjimjilbang, a museum cluster, a large bookstore, an underground shopping street, a department store food hall and a photo booth arcade will fill a full day with only a few minutes outside at a time. Subway stations run directly into many of these buildings, so a T-money card is effectively your rain gear.
When is Seoul’s rainy season?
Late June through August. It comes as short heavy downpours rather than all-day drizzle, which is why locals move things around instead of cancelling — a washed-out afternoon often sits next to a clear evening. Typhoon remnants can reach the peninsula in late summer, and usually cost a traveller an afternoon rather than a trip.
How do Koreans spend a rainy or freezing day?
Usually at a jjimjilbang — a bathhouse-and-sauna complex where a single entry fee buys you hours — or in a department store or underground mall where eating, shopping and sitting all happen in one climate-controlled building. On a cold day the default meal is hot soup: haejangguk, sundae-gukbap and their relatives.
Is Seoul’s summer heat dangerous for older travellers?
It can be. Seoul summers stack high temperatures on high humidity, and the hottest three days of the year have their own name and food ritual here. Walking with elderly parents, put the outdoor stretches before 10:00 or after 18:00 and keep the middle of the day indoors. A rollator or wheelchair turns resting into a choice rather than an emergency.
What should I carry in Seoul during rainy season?
A compact umbrella and shoes that dry fast, ahead of a rain jacket — the rain arrives in bursts and the humidity keeps everything damp afterwards. Umbrellas are sold in every convenience store, so if your case is tight there’s no reason to pack one from home.
